Do you enjoy going to the theaters and watching drama? Then there is only one place for you. The Young Shakespeare Competition (YSC). Young Shakespeare is an annual event of our school for many years now. It gives students the opportunity to act and perform on the stage. This school year, our YSC was spectacular. Students put their best effort and thought outside the box. The plays were amazing. I interviewed some students and asked them about their favorite plays. The majority chose Metallic Love by Grade 7 St. Thomas of Aquinas.
As one student said, ”I would choose Metallic Love, because you could tell why they chose this play. Everything about it is unique. The costumes were nothing short of creativity. The storyline was astonishing. The reason that the audience was so hooked is that they put a genre that none of the other Middle Schoolers thought of – they put love in their story. Of course, every play would need their own actresses and actors to bring the play to life, the actors were so passionate and intent on acting that it all seemed real. You could watch their play a thousand times and never get tired. On the other hand, High School plays had exceeded all my expectations. The High Schoolers did a great job even though they had more work to do. They were under more pressure, because the audience expected more from them.”
As I interviewed the audience, I could tell that they highly enjoyed the musical from Grade 11 St. Anthony. Their plot was unique and the music and choreography fit the story. Not only was their play good but the students were also great dancers! Unfortunately, the great play of Grade 11 St. Anthony didn’t win best play. In fact, the play of Grade 9 St. Rose won. The St. Rose play was about the rebellious streak of a military general’s daughter, who aspired to be a singer. Unfortunately, her dad had other plans. In the end her dad realized that peace was the only way and allowed her to achieve her dream. The Young Shakespeare Competition was an event full of hardworking students who shone brightly on stage. It was a time for students to show our school what they were capable of.
