The iconic word, anime, pronounced as ‘ah-knee-may’, is an abbreviation for the word ‘animation’. Nowadays, you can see it in many social media, drawings, sketches, and local products. However according to several surveys, a quarter of anime watchers don’t know that anime stands for animation or other background history about anime. Over the last 40 years, anime has become an international phenomenon attracting many watchers and fans not just in Japan but globally too. Although there are a wide variety of fans, the reason how anime can connect fans can be for a variety of genres given. For example, comedy, drama, action, romance, etc. However, the top 5 most popular genres that stood out according to a survey distributed to the student body are:

  1. Action
  2. Comedy
  3. Supernatural / Magic / Fantasy
  4. Romance
  5. Dark Fantasy

Also, there are 2 major forms of anime. First is anime itself with present technology that helps feature HD videos. Second is manga which is famous for having much more specific content about the story for fans that have a stronger need for manga or anime. Although they have all their pros and cons, I think anime beats manga greatly!

Obviously, every anime fan has a favorite anime! The top 3 are listed below:

  1. Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba | 鬼滅の刃)
  2. Three-way tie: Tokyo Ghoul (東京喰種) / Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin | 進撃の巨人) / Haikyuu!! (ハイキュー!!)
  3. Two-way tie: Free! (フリー!) / Violet Evergarden (ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン)
