The Dominican International School World Scholar’s Cup Team, led by Ms. Janice Doyle, attended the World Scholar’s Cup Regional Round in Kaohsiung from March 24 to 25, 2023.

The World Scholar’s Cup featured a variety of competitions, from team debates to collaborative writing and scholar’s bowl to scholar’s challenge. The topic for this year was reconstructing the past.

Day 1

The first event on Day 1 was Team Debate. Each team was given three debates to attend and would represent either the affirmative or negative team. The top debaters will be given the chance to debate on stage during the Debate Showcase on Day 2. If you have great prowess in debating but didn’t make it to the top 8, you get to be a panelist, which Sophie Marie Luna Cardenas from Grade 6 succeeded in doing despite the tough competition. Kimi Chen, Ray Liao, and Rachel Park had been rewarded with the 3rd place trophy in Team Debate thanks to their majestic debating skills!!!

The second event was collaborative writing. Each team was given six motions to write about from a choice of three. Then, teams were required to discuss and collaborate on each other’s writing to give each other advice. And actually, Jamie Cheng, Sophie Marie Luna Cardenas, and Qbi Wang from Grade 6 were brilliant writers and were rewarded with the 1st-place trophy for collaborative writing!!! The last event on Day 1 was the Scholar’s Challenge, which featured 120 questions about art, history, social studies, science, and special areas for competitors to entertain in an hour.

Day 2

The second day started with a thrilling Scholar’s Bowl. During the Scholar’s Bowl, students worked with their teams and answered questions through a clicker. The questions were like those being asked during the Scholar’s Challenge. With each question harder than the previous one, competitors had to decide on the most decent answer and use the clicker to indicate our choice.

After the Scholar’s Bowl, competitors who took part in the competition were given stuffed alpacas, which serves as the mascot of the World Scholar’s Cup. Later, the debate showcase took place, signaling the end of the competition. It was followed by the awarding ceremony, in which our school was awarded with 87 silver medals and 75 gold medals, along with several trophies, concluding the event.

None of our achievements could have happened without Ms. Janice Doyle devoting her time and efforts to organize the event. We would also like to thank Mr. Erick Gonzales, Ms. Chanting Lee, Mr. Ed Solis, and Ms. Janice Doyle for taking care of us while we took part in the World Scholar’s Cup.
