At the start of this school year, as always, students were asked to sign up for clubs that they wish to attend. Though clubs may seem like an insignificant part of students’ school lives, clubs have always been the part of every Friday afternoon that they look forward to. Different clubs offered for students this year include Code Club, Board Games Club, Football Club, Model United Nations (MUN), Volleyball Club, Street Dance Club, TORCH Club, Global Issues Network (GIN), Book Club, and DOMNET. The wide variety of clubs offered can provide students who have varying interests. For instance, students who enjoy physical activities can choose to join clubs such as the Volleyball Club, Football Club, or Street Dance Club. Amidst all the school work students have to handle in school, club time is a period of the week when they can take a break and spend time doing things of their personal interest. With the wide range of choices available, students will be able to find compatible clubs, no matter which area of interest they may have.
Some clubs that have become increasingly popular this school year include those such as MUN, DOMNET, Code Club, and GIN. Though a large majority of these clubs do require work to be done on the part of the students, they can help students learn and develop in a particular field. Students from various clubs have been asked about their thoughts regarding the particular club they joined. Here are some of their responses, along with an introduction, to help you get a deeper understanding of what each club is about.
“Model United Nations is a club wherein we simulate conferences of the United Nations and attempt to form resolutions, or solutions, to the issue at hand. I like my club because it allows me to expand my knowledge on world issues and improve my debating skills. In MUN, we are challenged to go out of our comfort zones and try to join conferences and meet new people and learn from each other.”
“I am a member of the DIS Code Club. In this club, as taken from the name, we basically go to websites and learn how to code. It’s fun to learn coding because you can learn to develop your programs and design and move figures on the computer. Furthermore, you can even make yourself a game by coding!”
“DOMNET is about making this world a better place by cooperating with everyone. In DOMNET club, We believe in a Gospel-centered education that is Catholic, Dominican. We strive dynamically and joyfully to serve others; to help others in service of truth through Mary. We commit ourselves to respond to the challenges we face. I love my club, because it is more than a club it is a place where we share and cooperate. DOMNET is my identity, my commitment, and my family.”
“GIN (Global Issued Network) is a club which cares especially for our environmental issues. There are groups, such as Peace, Poverty, Green and Education that hold various activities every school year to get students involved in different global issues as well as our environment. Events that we have held include the peace pole ceremony and hunger banquet. Our latest project for the club is the SKY project, where we invited African children to come to Taiwan.”
