While still frustrated with finding the right clothes to wear, Epic week has finally arrived. Epic Week is a tradition that has been passed down in DIS for many years. It is a time of celebration for all ages, from elementary to high school, where students work together for the common goal of promoting the school! Epic week encourages students to wear an array of fun and funky clothes, with a different outfit or item for each day of the week.

On Monday, we had to wear our house t-shirts with blue jeans. The school was packed with multitudes of color. There were dots of reds here and blues there, as if our halls and fields were flooded with brightly colored skittles pouring from classrooms and moving toward other floors. What an excellent way to kick-start Epic week!

On Tuesday, the theme was sports attire. Hoodies and basketball shorts were seen all throughout campus. Some wore shorts and some wore sweatpants. The sound of squeaky sneakers could be heard as students trudged to their classrooms. A group of girls was fixing their headbands and a few boys were bouncing basketballs. It seemed like a replica of the sports day we had a month ago.

Wednesday was headdress or hat day. An assortment of different kinds of hats, such as beanies, berets, bucket hats, baseball caps, top hats, and traditional hats was seen. Someone even wore an actual baseball helmet to school! Apart from this, a boy in my class wore a funky, green leprechaun hat to school and he even coincidentally twinned with another boy from the other class. The hats were floppy and ridiculous, which certainly brought many smiles to our faces.

Thursday was the “parade of nations” where we wore clothes that represent a country. Our school was packed with students of diverse nationalities with distinct cultural backgrounds. I saw a girl wearing the hanbok, the traditional clothing of Korea, to school. Another girl, who was in my class, wore a pretty pink kimono to school and everyone complimented her on how cool she looked! This day was deeply dedicated to honoring all cultures around the world and highlighting the beauty of each and every culture. Lastly, on Friday, it was free dress day! Students came in with clothes of their choices and the school was full of students with different colors and styles of clothing.

Clothes can be used to express so much meaning. It can be a symbol for a country and it can provide us a platform to express ourselves. When we wear something similar to someone, we form a small connection with them. In a similar way, Epic week has definitely underscored the unity between teachers and students of DIS as a big family that is always welcoming to new members!
