Student athletes compete with other schools in the hopes of winning that first place trophy, but more importantly, representing the best values of their school whilst competing. Camelia Huang was a freshman who competed in the JV Girls Basketball tournament. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to ask her a few questions regarding what it means to be a Dominican student athlete:
JM: What initially got you interested in the sport of basketball?
Camelia: I really don’t know why I got into basketball, but maybe because of the intense feeling while playing on the court.
JM: How does it feel to represent your school when competing in tournaments, and games in general?
Camelia: I feel pleasures to represent my school when competing in tournaments and games with other school.
JM: What does it take to be a part of your team?
Camelia: To be part of my team is actually not that hard—all I want to see from the person is passion and their willingness to learn and win.
JM: During your season, how do you balance athletics and academics?
Camelia: When I was in my old school I had less time to do my homework, so it kind of trained me into knowing how to manage my time when it’s limited. So as a new student in DIS, I got to play basketball and many other sports, and I get to focus more on my academics when I get back home.
JM: Do you listen to music before a game? If so, what kind of music do you listen to?
Camelia: I do listen to music before games. I mostly listen to pop music, for example, SICKO MODE by Drake, Spiral by 21 Savage, and other songs that I can vibe with. It can truly relax myself from the pressure and give me the energy to play.
JM: What does it mean to play as a team and how do your teammates help you play better?
Camelia: A team means that we’re aiming for winning together, and willing to fight and play hard for it.
Thank you, Camelia, for giving us a glimpse of what it’s like competing as a student athlete, whilst gloriously representing true Dominican values!
